Blank Stare

A while ago a wrote a piece for a zine my friend was working on, entitled Blank Stare: Distractions From Everyday Life. The new issue (number two) has my article, and Agnostic Front interview, Vile Intent tour diary, plus more. He and a friend are also running a record label also called Blank Stare. Until I got my copy of the zine I wasn’t aware of the stuff they had out already but it looks like they’ve already racked up a few releases to their name. More can be learned about this here: Blank Stare Hardcore.┬áThe label is unrelated to the band of the same name but they were good so I thought I’d post a song.

Youth of Today – T.O. 11/11/11

I used to think that labels were a symbol of pride, but overtime I’ve seen they only serve to divide.

It’s so easy to judge people by the way they seem to be, we must overcome these judgements to live life peacefully.

Break down the walls

We’ll break down the walls.

Break down the walls.

We’ll break down the walls, we will.

Look beyond the fashions or the crowd they hang in, look beyond riches or the colour of their skin.

Look beyond appearance and the truth you will find, look for what’s inside before you make up your mind.

Break down the walls

We’ll break down the walls.

Break down the walls.

We’ll break down the walls, we will.

I saw Youth of Today this past weekend. They were awesome. They sounded great and had great energy but what makes them special in my opinion is what the band is about. It was important for me to see them because although there are many bands out there that I think make good music I can’t say there are a lot that I find personally inspiring, but Youth of Today in one that I do. Look for my kind of crappy stage dive during the first verse. I also had I really good time catching up with some friends I haven;t seen for a while and eating out at the kinds of restaurants that are hard to find in small towns.

A couple interview links

I came across a couple interviews on other blogs that I thought deserved re-posting, both with the front men from influential ’80s hardcore bands. I don’t want to make an idol out of anyone as no one is infallible, but both of these are people I would say I have a lot of respect for because, in my opinion, both have more or less stayed true to the values they said they were about. Both were in bands made great music (and in some that made bad music) but there are a lot of bands out there that I would say make great music but I wouldn’t say I have respect for them or that the band was influential to me personally at all, where as I would say both of these people were in bands that did have an impact on in an important way. The first interview here is with Ian Mackaye of Minor Threat/Fugazi/Dischord fame, and the second is with Ray “Raghunath” Cappo of Youth of Today/Shelter isn’t really a full interview but a response to a specific topic posted by the blog, read it here. While not perfect I think both these guys were and despite lack of current involvement, still are good examples of what hardcore is about to me.

Here are the links again, stayed tuned for more Europe updates as well.

Youth Of Today

Not particularly inspired to post about my trip right now but I did want to re-post this Youth of Today interview I just read because it is from this year, it’s interesting to hear from Ray Cappo in 2011 (they have played a bunch of shows this year). Although I’m not into his support of ISKCON or certain of his beliefs I still have a lot of respect for him because of the lifestyle he leads and because I can listen to Youth of Today and, looking at his life now, not feel like he was just full of shit. Cheesy as it sounds I really do feel inspired every time I listen to We’re Not In This Alone, Disengage, or Break Down The Walls. Below is a video of them at the Anthrax in 1988. This is hardcore at its best, Cappo’s passion and the rest of the bands energy really come through in this video. Will post more trip pictures tomorrow.
